Cabinets take up more visual space than anything else in a kitchen, and they decide how efficiently you cook and store. Painting or refinishing, the cheapest path

Everything stays. The doors come off, get cleaned, sanded, primed, and sprayed, and go back on with new hardware. It works beautifully on solid wood doors and it is the single best return in a dated kitchen where the layout and boxes are fine.

It does not work on thermofoil or laminate doors, where the finish is a plastic film that paint will not bond to properly. If your door surface is a wrap rather than wood, painting is a short-lived fix.

Refacing, the middle path

The boxes stay and everything you see gets replaced: new doors, new drawer fronts, new hardware, and a matching veneer over the exposed box sides and face frames. You get a genuinely new-looking kitchen without demolition, and you can change the door style entirely.

Refacing makes sense when the boxes are solid but the doors are damaged, dated beyond painting, or you want a different style. It costs less than replacement, makes far less mess, and finishes in days rather than weeks.

Replacing, when the boxes are the problem

New cabinets are the right call when the boxes are water-damaged or failing, when the layout itself needs to change, or when you want storage the existing configuration cannot give you. Replacement is your one chance to fix a bad floor plan, not just a dated finish.

The test that decides it

Open the cabinet under your kitchen sink and press on the floor of it with your thumb. If it flexes or feels soft, the box is particle board that has been absorbing moisture, and painting or refacing it is money spent on something that is already failing. If it is firm, your boxes are worth keeping.

The expensive mistake runs both directions: paying for full replacement when refacing would have done the job, or refacing over boxes that should have come out. We give you the honest read on your kitchen, not the biggest invoice.

If you are replacing, there are three tiers, and the difference is mostly about how much the cabinet has to bend to fit your room.

Stock

Factory-built in standard sizes, usually in three inch increments, with a limited set of finishes. Fastest lead times and lowest cost. Stock works well when your layout is straightforward and standard dimensions land cleanly along your walls.

The catch is filler strips. When standard widths do not add up to your wall length, the gap gets covered with a filler panel. One is normal. Four is a kitchen that should have been semi-custom.

Semi-Custom

You modify widths, depths, heights, interior configurations, and finishes within a manufacturer's line. This is where most Topeka kitchens land, and it is usually the right answer in an older home where nothing is a standard dimension. Lead times typically run four to eight weeks.

Full Custom

Custom cabinets are built to your exact specifications by a regional shop: any wood species, any door style, any finish, any dimension, and interior accessories designed around how you actually cook. Custom is worth it when your layout is genuinely unusual, when you want a piece built into a space that was never meant for cabinets, or when you want a specific wood and finish nobody stocks.

The door is what you look at every day, and the style sets the tone of the whole kitchen.

• Shaker. A flat center panel in a square frame. It has been the default for over a decade because it reads clean in a modern kitchen and appropriate in a traditional one, it is easy to wipe down, and it does not date as fast as anything trendier. If you want a choice you will not regret in eight years, this is it.
• Flat slab. A single flat panel with no frame. Fully modern, the easiest of all to clean, and it shows off wood grain or a bold color with nothing competing.
• Raised panel. A center panel that steps up from the frame. Traditional, more formal, and the style most likely to read as dated in a contemporary room.
• Beaded or inset. Doors that sit flush inside the face frame rather than on top of it. It is the most refined look and the most expensive, because inset doors require tight tolerances and drift out of adjustment if the boxes are not perfectly square.

Two-tone is worth mentioning since we install a lot of it in Topeka: darker bases with lighter uppers keeps a small kitchen from feeling heavy while still giving you color.

Everybody shops doors. Almost nobody asks about the box, and the box is what decides whether your cabinets are still good in twenty years.

Plywood versus particle board. We install plywood boxes as our standard. Plywood holds a screw far better, which matters because your upper cabinets hang from screws and your drawer slides are screwed into the sides. It also survives getting wet. Particle board swells when it takes on moisture and does not recover, which is why the cabinet under the sink is always the first one to fail.

Particle board is not automatically bad, and a quality particle board box with a good finish is fine in a laundry room. In a kitchen, under stone counters, next to a dishwasher, plywood is worth the difference.

Drawer construction. Look for solid wood drawer boxes with dovetail joints rather than stapled particle board. A dovetailed drawer holds together under weight for decades. Stapled corners work loose.

Slides and hinges. Full-extension soft-close slides let you reach the back of the drawer instead of fishing around in the last six inches. Soft-close hinges stop doors slamming. Both are standard on decent cabinets now, and both are the first things cut from a suspiciously cheap quote.

• Refacing: roughly $4,000 to $10,000.

The upgrades that change daily life are not the expensive ones. These are the ones worth asking for.

• Drawers instead of doors on base cabinets. The single best change you can make. A base cabinet with a door means kneeling and reaching into a dark hole. Three deep drawers in the same space means everything comes to you. Pot and pan storage especially.
• A pull-out under the sink, shaped around the plumbing, so the least usable cabinet in the kitchen becomes storage for cleaning supplies.
• A trash pull-out with a bin for waste and one for recycling, which gets the trash can out of the middle of your floor.
• Uppers to the ceiling. Standard uppers stop short and leave a soffit or a dust shelf above. Running them to the ceiling with crown molding buys a full extra shelf and looks intentional.
• A drawer near the stove for spices, with an insert, instead of a tall narrow pull-out you have to read sideways.
• Toe-kick drawers, which turn dead space under the base cabinets into storage for sheet pans and platters.

• Remove and inspect. We pull the old cabinets, locate studs, check the walls for plumb and level, and deal with any water damage or structural problems before anything new goes up.
• Uppers first. Upper cabinets hang on a level ledger line and get screwed directly into studs with structural fasteners. Doing uppers before bases means nobody is reaching over a new base cabinet with a drill.
• Bases shimmed level. Base cabinets get shimmed to true level on the floor, which in an older Topeka home almost never matches the floor itself, then fastened to each other and to the wall.
• Scribe to the walls. Where a cabinet meets a wall that is not plumb, the filler or end panel gets scribed to the wall's actual shape so the joint closes tight.
• Align faces and reveals. Consistent gaps on every door and drawer, adjusted at the hinge.
• Coordinate the trades. We sequence with countertop templating, plumbing rough-in, and electrical for under-cabinet lighting so everything lands where it should.
