Paver Patio Cost in Topeka: The Base Is the Bill

The Square Foot You Found Is a National Average

Search paver patio cost and the answer is a range. Unilock's cost page puts a professional install between $10 and $40 a square foot, with a typical total of $4,000 to $14,000. The same page lists about $3,000 to $6,500 for 150 square feet, $4,800 to $12,000 for 300, and $5,000 to $16,000 for 400. Homewyse priced a brick paver patio at $20.03 to $25.95 a square foot in May 2026.

I am Ryan Felix. I own Kingdom Builders Co. in Topeka. Those numbers are published national ranges. They are not a Kingdom quote. A bid here starts with the soil, the slope, and whether an old slab has to come out.

What Moves a Topeka Bid

Kansas clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. Freeze-thaw pushes on anything set on a thin sand bed. A patio built that way heaves, sinks, and grows weeds in the joints. The pavers are the part you shop. The gravel base, compacted in lifts, is the part that keeps the surface flat.

That is why two bids for the same 300 square feet can be thousands apart. One price is pavers on a skim of sand. The other price dug out the clay, built the base, and pitched the water away from the house. Ask each contractor how deep they excavate and how they compact the base. If they cannot answer, you are comparing a surface to a structure.

Elevate Outdoor lists tearing out an existing slab at about $2 to $6 a square foot on top of the new patio. Treat that as a published national add-on. Kingdom's estimate uses its own line for that haul. On a Topeka lot, hauling a broken slab and rebuilding the base is real labor. It belongs on the estimate as its own line.

When the Clay Is Too Wet to Compact

I have opened holes in April where the grass looked fine and the clay underneath was still soup. A plate compactor on that mud bounces. The gravel pumps. The pavers look level on Friday and have a birdbath by the next spring.

We wait for the hole to firm up, or we dig the wet clay out and bring in gravel we can compact in lifts. That wait is part of a Topeka schedule in a wet spring. A bid that promises the patio the week after a five-inch rain is guessing. The paver patio cost has to include the days the ground will not take a compactor.

After a rain, walk the spot where you want the patio. If water sits there, or runs at the house, the bid has to include pitch and a path for that water. A pretty paver field that dumps rain at the foundation is a basement problem with a new surface on top.

Material Changes the Foot Price

Concrete pavers are the common install. Brick costs more in labor when the pattern has a lot of cuts. Natural stone, including flagstone, costs more in material and in the time it takes to fit irregular pieces. Unilock's page puts standard concrete pavers around $8 to $15 a square foot for a basic layout, and up to $30 to $40 when the design gets custom. Brick sits around $10 to $25. Natural stone runs about $15 to $50 and up.

Our patio page already uses a tighter local guide: pavers about $15 to $30 a square foot installed, stamped concrete about $12 to $20, poured concrete less than that. That guide is a planning band. The written number comes from measuring the yard. See patio construction in Topeka for the surfaces we actually build.

A small patio often costs more per foot than a large one. The truck, the compactor, and the crew still show up. A 12 by 12 does not get a discount just because the paver count is lower.

"Kingdom Builders did a fantastic job on my patio. I wasn't really sure what I wanted done but we worked through it and they did a great job! It was in the heat of the summer and they worked quickly and efficiently. Everything was perfect and very clean. Couldn't recommend more! Highly recommend!"

Add-Ons That Are a Second Project

A seat wall, steps, and a fire pit are not a border upgrade. Elevate Outdoor's published ranges put a built-in fire pit around $2,500 to $8,000 and a seat wall around $150 to $300 a linear foot. An outdoor kitchen is a separate budget. If the fire feature is gas, the gas line is its own scope. That work lives on the outdoor fire pit page, and a wall or walkway lives on hardscaping.

Curves and diagonal patterns add cuts. Every cut is time. A rectangle with a straight border is the bid that matches the national average. A fan pattern around a seat wall is a different job.

The Edge Holds the Field

Pavers stay put because something hard stops them at the border. A plastic or aluminum edge restraint, spiked into the base, is the usual piece. Skip it and the outside row creeps, the joints open, and the field spreads. Joint sand is the other half. It locks the units to each other.

On the bid, the edge and the sand should be named. If both lines are missing, the square-foot price left out the part that keeps a paver patio a patio after the first winter.

Where We Build, and Where We Do Not

We build paver patios in Topeka, Shawnee County, and Lawrence. Shawnee County is the county around Topeka. The city of Shawnee is in Johnson County, next to Lenexa. We do not run patio crews in the city of Shawnee, Lenexa, Fairway, Mission, or Aubry.

How to Read the Quotes

Set three bids next to each other and check the same lines.

  • Excavation depth, and whether the base is compacted in lifts.
  • Where the water goes. It should leave the foundation.
  • Edge restraint and the joint sand, named, not just "sand."
  • Removal of an old slab or deck, as its own dollar line.
  • Pavers by name, and the pattern, so the cut count is in the price.

A bid that is far under the other two usually skipped the base or left the old concrete in place and called it prep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a paver patio cost in Topeka?

Published national installs run about $10 to $40 a square foot, and a common total is $4,000 to $14,000. Our planning band for pavers here is about $15 to $30 a square foot installed. Clay, slope, and an old slab move the real number. That number is a written estimate after we see the yard.

Why is one paver bid so much cheaper?

The cheap bid often skipped excavation and compaction. Pavers on a thin sand bed look finished the week they go in. Kansas freeze-thaw is what shows the missing base.

Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?

On our patio page, stamped concrete is the lower planning band, about $12 to $20 a square foot, against about $15 to $30 for pavers. Stamped concrete is one slab. A cracked paver can be swapped. A cracked slab is a different repair.

Do you build paver patios in the city of Shawnee?

No. We build in Topeka, Shawnee County, and Lawrence. The city of Shawnee and Lenexa are in Johnson County. We do not run patio crews there.
