The Square Foot You Found Is a National Average
Search hardwood floor cost and the answer is a range. Homewyse put a basic hardwood install at $13.19 to $16.72 a square foot in May 2026. The same month, prefinished hardwood was $15.53 to $19.83, and engineered wood was $7.89 to $12.79. Those are national unit costs for a basic job. They are not a Kingdom quote.
I am Ryan Felix. I own Kingdom Builders Co. in Topeka. Our hardwood page uses a local planning band of about $8,000 to $15,000 installed for a main level around 1,000 square feet, including subfloor prep, the install, the finish, and the trim. That band is for planning. The written number comes after we meter the floor.

What Moves a Topeka Bid
Kansas houses swing from a dry January to a humid July. Solid wood moves with that swing. If the boards go down the day they arrive, the joints open in winter. We leave the wood in the house for a few days so it matches the room. That time is part of the schedule, and it belongs on the bid.
The other half is the subfloor. A squeak, a dip, or a slab that reads wet changes the job before a plank is nailed. Engineered wood handles a slab better than solid. Solid oak on a main floor can be sanded again years later. The hardwood floor installation page is where those two products are spelled out.

Ask for a moisture reading on the subfloor before you pick a stain. A wet reading means the install waits, or the product changes to engineered. Stain color does not fix a damp floor.
Species Changes the Foot Price
Red oak is the common Topeka floor. White oak, hickory, maple, and walnut cost more in the material. Wider planks waste more at the walls, so the foot price climbs even when the labor looks the same. A clear grade looks even. A character grade shows knots, and the photo above is that look.
Site-finished wood is sanded and coated in the house. Prefinished planks arrive with the finish already on. Homewyse priced those paths apart on purpose. A bid that only names "hardwood" has not said which one you are buying.

We install hardwood in Topeka and Shawnee County. Shawnee County is the county around Topeka. It includes Silver Lake, Auburn, and Rossville. We do not install hardwood in Fairway, Fort Riley, Lenexa, or the city of Shawnee. A deck is a different job, on the deck building page.
How to Read the Quotes
- Solid or engineered, named.
- Species and width, named.
- Days for the wood to sit in the house.
- Subfloor repair or a moisture reading, as its own line.
- Site-finished or prefinished, so the sanding dust is either in the price or it is not.
A bid that is far under the other two usually skipped the subfloor or the acclimation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a hardwood floor cost in Topeka?
Homewyse put a basic national install at $13.19 to $16.72 a square foot in May 2026. Our planning band for about 1,000 square feet is $8,000 to $15,000 installed. Moisture, species, and the subfloor move the real number. That number is a written estimate after we see the house.
Is engineered wood cheaper than solid?
On the Homewyse pages from May 2026, engineered wood was the lower unit cost, about $7.89 to $12.79 a square foot, against about $13 to $17 for a basic solid install. Engineered is also the board we use on a slab.
Do you install hardwood in Fairway or at Fort Riley?
No. We install in Topeka and Shawnee County. Fairway and Fort Riley are outside that area.
