The Price You Found Depends on Which Page You Opened
Search pergola cost and the ranges do not agree. Angi put the 2026 national average at $4,253, with most projects between $2,118 and $6,433. The same page lists cedar at $25 to $35 a square foot and a 12 by 12 around $4,300 to $8,600. Homewyse priced a custom site-built cedar or redwood pergola at $106 to $149 a square foot in May 2026. Those are published national figures. They are not a Kingdom quote.
I am Ryan Felix. I own Kingdom Builders Co. in Topeka. Our pergola page uses a local planning band of $5,000 to $18,000, and about $7,000 to $10,000 for a 12 by 14 pressure-treated wood pergola with concrete footings, stain, and basic lighting. The written number comes from the yard.

What Moves a Topeka Bid
A kit from a store is lumber and brackets. A pergola that stays put in Kansas has posts on concrete, set below the frost line, and hardware that can take the wind. Two bids for the same 12 by 14 can be thousands apart because one price is the kit on short posts and the other price is the footings.
Attached pergolas tie into the house. Freestanding ones carry their own posts. A ledger that is not flashed becomes a leak at the siding. Ask which one the bid is. The build sequence is on the pergola installation page.

Stand on the patio at 3 p.m. in July before you pick a size. If the sun still hits the table under a 10 by 10, the pergola is too small for that yard. The posts and the footings get priced for the size you actually need.
Wood, Aluminum, and a Solid Roof
Pressure-treated pine is the lower wood. Cedar costs more and weathers differently. Aluminum, and a louvered roof, sit at the top of the planning band. Angi lists aluminum and vinyl at $10 to $30 a square foot for the material comparison, which is not the same number as a full install with footings.
A solid cover that sheds rain is a shade structure, not a pergola. That work is on the shade structure page. If the quote you have is for a roof, you are comparing it to the wrong product.

How to Read the Quotes
- Footing depth, named, not "posts included."
- Wood species or aluminum, named.
- Attached or freestanding, and flashing if it meets the house.
- Stain, lighting, and a louvered roof as their own lines.
- A kit price with no labor is a different purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a pergola cost in Topeka?
Angi's 2026 national average is $4,253, and most projects fall between $2,118 and $6,433. Homewyse priced a custom cedar or redwood build much higher, at $106 to $149 a square foot in May 2026. Our planning band is $5,000 to $18,000. Footings and material decide where a yard lands. That number is a written estimate.
Why is one pergola bid so much cheaper?
The cheap bid is often a kit, or posts that do not go below the frost line. Kansas wind and freeze-thaw are what show the missing concrete.
Is a pergola the same as a patio cover?
No. A pergola is an open roof. A solid cover that stops rain is a shade structure. We build both, on different pages.
Do you build pergolas in the city of Shawnee?
No. We build in Topeka, Shawnee County, and Lawrence. The city of Shawnee and Lenexa are in Johnson County.
